Crafted by avid Colorado anglers, the VAYA series debuts an all-new technical look and feel paired with outstanding performance. The partially-ported VAYA frame offers the unique combination of minimized weight, incredible rigidity, and just enough surface area to highlight Abel’s hand-anodized finishes. The frame interior also features varying sets of CNC-milled fly patterns, relevant to each size of reel.
The large-arbor spool features a precision-balanced, dual-pawl drag engagement design that eliminates the need for a counterweight. The spool’s mechanical incoming click compliments the audible, smooth feel of the outgoing drag. The carbon / stainless multi-disk drag system produces substantial resistance, while providing a wide range of adjustability for delicate tippet.

This was my second Abel vaya purchase. I have the reel in a 4/5 and needed something for my 7wt. The dual pawl drag system works great and the reels are so beautiful I couldn’t pass it up. I got an Underwood edition model and it turned out beautifully. It was easy to work the ReelFlyRod customization tool to build the reel.

I spent some time investigating this reel and wasn’t able to find a variety of reviews - so I hope this helps. First - it’s an Abel. The quality is unsurpassed as you would expect. Second - for the price - I found few reels available in this range that could match my perceived value of the Vaya (I bought a 7/8) - though there are one or two competitors out there depending on your wants/needs. But this, along with the specs, are all things you can easily evaluate online / in the fly shop. What I did find through google / upon receipt of the reel that was not abundantly available:
1. buried in a Flylords magazine interview with Abel - is that the drag “ramps up to 10 pounds.” Use this information how you will.
2. the reel is touted as having a “minimized weight” - I think they have it just about right for my 7 - regardless, and just as important, the design does not affect the frame strength. There are other “lightweight” reels in the 7/8 category I tested whose frames are malleable under a little pressure - not the case with the Vaya. *Note - I have not fished those “lightweight” reels and am not a reel designer, so I only mention it for awareness.
3. I find the Vaya reel handle and drag knob to be more than sufficient and both provide for easy access / ‘gripability’ (I have big paws so this is a primary consideration for me).
4. the drag design is unique. I’m trusting Abel on this one - so if you have questions contact them - they’ll give you the run down.
