Then Echo cut, shaved, and overhauled the core of the reel until they could shoehorn a robust four-layer carbon fiber disc drag system in the hub of the reel. This new design includes sealed O-rings to keep water and dirt from entering the guts of the reel, for smooth, reliable performance. Bought it on sale and in the end, I have a favorable impression of this reel. It does exactly what I ask of it; hang out on the end of my 18 year old Echo fly rod and hold my line. Plus, it looks pretty darn good doing it. I haven't dropped it yet, so I can't attest to the strength of the castings. I haven't caught a fish on it large enough to bother with the drag, but it certainly seems smooth enough with low to little start-up inertia. It's also free of run on, which some reels at this price point can suffer from. The only downside to this reel is it's a little too quiet for me. I love that sensation and that sound of a good reel when pulling line and on the retrieve. This reel is just smooth and quiet. Some people will view that as a positive. But hey, I'm also the guy who doesn't mind the noise from my $120 textured fly lines. So there's that.....
