This rod does almost everything I need it to do. Small/medium dry flies, nymph rig, even small streamers. The extra length helps when fishing from a kayak or float tube. The competition kit is big upgrade for nymphing, giving you the texture length and the fighting butt is nice.

My first nymph rod-FANTASTIC feel and reach. Matched the competition kit for that extra bit of reach. Truth is, I purchased one for each of my sons as well.

I love this rod. Of course it euro nymphs well, but I was glad to see that it casts a large or small dry beautifully with a SA GPX 4 line. I can even hero-cast for distance if need be. I have zero complaints.

Good Euro Nymphing rod, but the rod tip is noticeably heavier than other rods at a similar price range. I’d recommend getting a heavier reel to balance it out and/or the Shadow 2 competition kit.

My goal for this rod was to be able to learn to Euro Nymph with a rod that could also throw a dry if needed. I have paired this rod with the Scientific Anglers Euro Shorty, which makes it easy to remove the euro line and cast dries. It will cast large hoppers beutifully if needed. Tip sensitivity is good, however if you are looking for a Euro dedicated rod it may not be as sensitive as you'd like. The tip is fragile, like all Euro rods, and I have so far broken the tip once landing a large trout. I would recommend buying a replacement tip in advance, espicially if you will be hiking in to fish. My only complaint is that it has an uplocking reel seat, throwing the rod balance past the cork, focing you to oversize the reel. A perfect rod at the price point, minus the uplocking seat.

I started euro nymphing last December with my Shadow 2 and my qty of trout and whitefish hits and landed fish has improved tremendously when fishing “sub surface” (great for winter trout hunting in rivers / streams). There are many factors (type of fly, leader, presentation, etc) but the Shadow 2 has been one of the biggest reasons for the success. The length allows me to reach further across when wade fishing, and the sensitive tip allows me to feel any bump or bite immediately for quicker hook sets. I also have the competition extension to make it 11’ - more reach if needed. It’s really light and I’ve fished 8-10 hour days and not felt any arm or shoulder fatigue from the weight of the rod. Also Echo is in the US and has a quick turnaround in the event you might break your tip like I did (my fault). I have a spare tip now in case I get careless on the river again!

I bought this rod a little over a month ago and have been using it steadily to nymph through the winter months. It has been nothing short of a perfect rod and meets all of my needs including price point. I'd recommend this rod to anyone serious about nymphing, it will not disappoint.
