HARDY ULTRADISC UDLA 5000 FLY REEL : 4-6WT
The Hardy Ultradisc UDLA 5000 fly reel is a lightweight disc drag reel in the purest form. The Ultradisc features everything you need and nothing that you don’t in a disc drag fly reel. Designed with an innovative frame, this reel sets a new standard in lightweight performance reels, allowing the use of ultrathin fly lines and running lines as well as leader only systems popular in modern nymphing techniques. The Scaled multi-pad drag system is also unregulated, meaning fine adjustments of the drag pressure over a large window is possible.

I bought this reel to go with my Hardy Ultralite X Rod. It is the perfect match. I am a big fan of this reel, it looks great and it is the perfect weight. My only gripe is that I wish it had a longer warranty. I feel like 5 years for a quality reel isn't long enough. That said, I would buy another one.

Very light but also very durable reel. The drag is very smooth but also strong enough for any freshwater fish out there.

I have been using the 5000 series UDLA for a couple of months now after Hardy finally sent the correct model to my retailer after twice sending the 4000 model in the 5000 box. I would say that the reel lives up to the marketing hype, it is extremely light for its size and balances my 3wt 9'9" OPST micro skagit two hander perfectly. The drag is phenomenal and quite fun to battle a large fish without the loud annoying noises like some reels. The only problem I have encountered (and it has happened a couple of times already) is that the cap that screws onto the drag system within the spool comes loose and will lock up the drag and also cause the spool to loosen. I had the spool fall off the reel during battle and the cap inside fall into the water. Fortunately I was standing in still water and after landing the fish manually noticed the orange cap laying on the river bed. This has happened twice after that incident and now I am always checking to make sure things are tight. But that is not acceptable for a Hardy product. I have yet to reach out to Hardy regarding the issue, but what is that worth these days? Hardy is no longer Hardy. It may as well have a Nike swoosh on it. I really do like the reel, but only recommend it with a warning.
