Not all hackle pliers are created equal. These have a nice grip and really grab the material you're working with. Would recommend if you're in the market to upgrade from that beginner fly tying kit.

You wouldn't think there's a lot of difference in hackle pliers. At least, that's what I thought. But then I tried these. Love the strong tension, and the large, coated thumb pads that make depressing them easy and comfortable. And the squared head makes it simple to grab a hackle - or other material - right where you want it. I have several pairs of hackle pliers on my bench, but I always reach for the Loon first.
