In 1975 or 1976, I purchased my first fly rod and reel. I seem to remember that is was a Shakespeare rod with a Pflueger Medalist 1492 reel. About a year later, I purchased an Orvis Battenkill reel and I decided I also needed a new rod. Since I couldn't afford to buy an Orvis rod at the time, I chose to buy Orvis Rod Blanks and build my own rod. Over the years, I became very good at building rods and built many more Orvis rods from blanks and matched them with the perfect Battenkill Reels. Several years ago I gave all of my fly fishing gear (and my fly tying gear) to my son who was moving to Colorado... A few months ago, I decided to get back into fly fishing. This time, for the first time, I bought an Orvis Rod... I got the 7'-6" Clearwater 3 weight because my favorite rod from years ago was a 3 weight that I had built. I could not be happier with the rod's performance and the quality is superior... My rod building days are behind me, but I will be purchasing more Orvis rods in the future...

This was my first rod a few years ago for small trout streams and it worked perfect especially for the small alpine streams in the Sierra Nevadas. I use it mostly for a dry dropper rig but have casted out a streamer for more distance and worked well enough for me. Highly recommend as a starter. Also Orvis provides a great warranty program for replacement rods.

I have the 2018 version of the Clearwater in a 5wt. The 2019 model appears to be a cosmetic upgrade black color scheme instead of green. The performance feels the same. This is made in China but will make a great starter rod. Orvis gives this rod a great warranty and replacement program just like the high end rods.
