I purchase the small rings (2mm outer dimension) for trout and panfish. They improved my time on spring creeks. I modified my 9' tapered leaders by cutting off about 3 feet of the tippet end and then tying the ring onto the shortened leader. I then tied the 3' tippet to the ring. It is so much easier to use just a clinch knot to tie on new tippet compared to my fumbling attempts to tie on a new tippet using a double (or triple) surgeon's knot. I used the modified leaders for both surface fishing and nymphing.
