The Ross Reels Evolution R Reel is a redesigned version of the very popular Evolution LT. Lighter weight and a new industry first drag design, the Ross Evolution R is going to be your #1 freshwater fly reel.
The Evolution R is not only lightweight, but also incredibly rigid and durable, with a unique geometry that is as functional as it is stylish. The innovative shape of the ultra-large arbor spool is engineered to force the even winding of the line across the face of the spool as it is retrieved - something never before seen in a fly reel.
The new drag design is also an industry first: a fully sealed, bonded proprietary carbon fluoropolymer and stainless-steel interface that delivers smooth power in a lightweight, compact package. Start-up inertia is virtually non-existent to protect the most delicate of tippets. The Evolution R’s extremely wide range of brake adjustment also manages to produce some of the highest drag pressure found in any fly reel.
This all is controlled by a subtle yet striking, frame-integrated drag knob that blends perfectly into the form of the reel. Its solid grip allows for easy manipulation of settings - even while wearing gloves. I've had many reels in this size - Lamson Litespeed 5, Sage Spectrum, Hatch Fanatic 2, and this is my favorite. It's not too light, not too heavy, it's solidly made, looks great, and to some the drag knob is a point of contention but I think it's perfect. The drag is crazy strong. My favorite is the handle. If you are spending hours upon hours reeling as all fisherman do a unique handle that is more comfortable than others is a big deal. I also bought in a 7/8 wt. Great feel and sound. Thank you Ross.

I upgraded my rod and reel and was looking for a great reel, that was greater beyond me..! I would love to pass down a couple of Rolex watches to my boys, but reality is.. that's not happening. What is happening though, is the legacy gift that my son will receive with this reel. The workmanship on the reel is amazing, the smooth casting, and confidence of sealed gears, easy to adjust drag.. this thing has it all!

I have several Abel reels but I wanted a reel with a sealed drag and minimal maintenance. The reel had to be light, have a smooth drag, appeal to me visually, and be of impeccable quality. As I was exploring what Abel had to offer, I came across Ross Reels as they are manufactured now by the same company. After a very thorough review, I honed in on the Revolution R 4/5. I bought the reel and a line at ReelFlyRod. The company set the reel up with backing, my line, and a leader for free. Great service!!
The reel lived up to my expectations. Extremely solid, yet light with a silk-smooth drag. I love the look of the reel on my Winston. The craftsmanship is perfect. I've had to dunk it in the river while untangling dry-dropper rigs and there is no change in the smoothness or the drag setting. I like the grippy canvas phenolic handle more than I expected. The reel is different than my Abels but perfect for its purpose.
In short, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. The service and shipping was prompt and communications with the company flawless.
