Spring and its warmer weather finally arrived. The Mad River is becoming prime for bug activity. The water temperatures are increasing and we are excited to have found Hendricksons on the river. The Hendrickson hatch is our first larger mayfly hatch that signals the start of dry fly fishing.
The Hendrickson hatch can really be found on most of the usual Mad River stretches. It should move upstream with each passing day, but our pro-staff tangled with some good dry fly fishing in the southern sections, and a great hatch a couple days ago in and around the city of Urbana. In the mid mornings, nymphing will be the strategy for success. We are starting to see sporadic hatches around the 1-2pm range. This sporadic hatch which you can target with soft hackles or emergers is a great time to stalk a couple of fish splashing the surfaces. The emerger being the hot ticket fly during this stent.
Once the hatch gets a little thicker tie on a dun with an emerger and you should be able to land a couple trout to the net. Dust off the 4wt or 5wt and stop by the shop, we have a full selection Hendrickson nymphs, soft hackles, emergers, and duns.
